Stop Chasing Prophetic Words and Start Walking With the Holy Spirit

It seems that many believers today are chasing prophetic ministries, conferences, and words from others. Please hear me clearly—I love receiving a prophetic word from my brothers and sisters in Christ. Prophecy is a beautiful gift from God, and often it serves as confirmation, encouragement, and direction.

However, I am concerned that many new believers, and even mature believers—are becoming dependent on hearing from someone else instead of developing their own relationship with the One Jesus gave to every believer: the Holy Spirit.

The Gift Jesus Gave to All Believers

Jesus did not leave us alone to navigate life. He promised that the Holy Spirit would come and dwell within us.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” (John 14:26)

The Holy Spirit is not merely an experience; He is your Helper, Counselor, Teacher, and Friend. He leads you into truth, reveals God’s heart, convicts you, comforts you, and guides your steps.

Jesus said:

“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth… and He will tell you things to come.” (John 16:13)

Think about that. The Holy Spirit can guide you regarding your family, relationships, business decisions, ministry opportunities, where you live, and every area of your life.

Learn to Hear His Voice

Many believers hesitate to trust what they sense God is saying because they’re afraid of getting it wrong. The truth is, every believer grows through practice.

Will you sometimes misinterpret what you’re hearing? Yes.

Will you occasionally miss it? Absolutely.

But growth comes through relationship and obedience. As you spend time with God and learn to recognize His voice, your discernment increases.

Jesus said:

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” (John 10:27)

Notice He didn’t say only prophets hear His voice. He said His sheep hear His voice.

The more time you spend with Him, the more familiar His voice becomes.

Test Everything Against Scripture

One of the greatest safeguards for hearing God accurately is knowing His Word.

The Holy Spirit will never contradict the Scriptures He inspired.

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God…” (2 Timothy 3:16)

This is why reading the Bible, studying context, and even researching the original Greek and Hebrew meanings can be so valuable. When you know God’s character and His Word, you become better equipped to discern His voice.

The Holy Spirit sounds like Jesus because He reveals Jesus.

Be Like the Bereans

The Apostle Paul praised the Bereans because they didn’t simply accept what they heard. They searched the Scriptures for themselves.

“Now the Bereans were of more noble character… for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” (Acts 17:11)

Don’t just rely on what someone else says God is speaking. Seek Him yourself.

Spend time alone with God.

Write down what you sense He is saying.

Pray over it.

Study the Scriptures.

Then return to Him and ask for understanding and interpretation.

Relationship is where revelation grows.

Prophecy Should Confirm, Not Replace

I am not saying prophetic ministry isn’t valuable. It absolutely is.

Many times God uses prophetic believers to confirm what He has already been speaking to us privately.

“Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:20-21)

Healthy prophecy strengthens our walk with God. It should point us back to dependence on the Holy Spirit, not dependence on a prophet.

The goal is not to become addicted to receiving words from others. The goal is to know God for yourself.

Walk in the Gift God Gave You

If you belong to Christ, the Holy Spirit lives within you.

He desires to guide you, teach you, comfort you, and reveal God’s heart to you personally.

God is not withholding Himself from His children.

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” (Romans 8:14)

So yes, receive prophetic encouragement when God sends it.

But don’t neglect the greatest gift Jesus gave after His ascension, the Holy Spirit Himself.

Spend time with Him.

Listen.

Learn His voice.

Trust His leading.

Walk in the gift God has already given you.

Your life will never be the same.
