When God Calls You to Leave What’s Comfortable

There are moments in life when you know, deep down, that God is asking you to move.

Not because where you are is bad.

Not because you don’t love the people.

Not because you’re unhappy.

Simply because the season has ended.

I’ve walked through this more than once, and if I’m honest, it never gets easier.

Every time God has called me to leave a job that I loved, a company where I had built meaningful friendships, or a place that had become familiar, I’ve wrestled with fear. I wish I could tell you that I always step out with complete confidence, but the truth is, I don’t.

Instead, the questions start.

“Did I hear God correctly?”

“What if I’m making the biggest mistake of my life?”

“What if nothing is better than what I’m leaving?”

It’s amazing how quickly our minds begin to rewrite history. Suddenly, the place we’re leaving seems perfect. We forget the prayers we prayed asking God for direction. We forget the days we cried out for change. We remember only the comfort.

Fear has a way of making yesterday look better than it really was.

But every single time I’ve chosen to trust God instead of my fear, He has proven Himself faithful.

Not once has He led me backward.

Not once has He forgotten me.

Not once have I looked back and wished I had stayed where He asked me to leave.

The hardest part is that I can never see it while I’m in the middle of the transition.

Transitions are uncomfortable. They stretch us. They require us to let go before we can see what God is placing in our hands next.

It’s only months later—sometimes years—that I look back with tears in my eyes and whisper, “God… thank You.”

Thank You for not letting me settle.

Thank You for loving me enough to move me.

Thank You that Your plans were so much bigger than mine.

I think about Abraham. God simply said, “Go.”

He didn’t hand Abraham a detailed itinerary. He didn’t explain every stop along the journey. He simply asked for obedience.

“By faith Abraham, when he was called to go… obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.”

— Hebrews 11:8

That’s what faith looks like.

It’s taking the next step when you don’t have all the answers.

One verse has carried me through so many transitions:

“Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.”

— Deuteronomy 28:6

God never said His blessing was tied to one job, one house, one city, or one season.

His blessing is tied to His presence.

If He’s asking you to leave, He’s already gone ahead of you.

His favor isn’t staying behind with what you’re walking away from.

It is walking beside you.

Another promise I’ve held onto is:

“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid… for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”

— Joshua 1:9

Notice that God didn’t say, “Don’t be afraid because you’ll understand everything.”

He said, “Don’t be afraid because I am with you.”

I’ve learned that His presence is far more valuable than my certainty.

Maybe you’re reading this today, and you feel that gentle nudge from God.

Maybe He’s asking you to leave a job.

Maybe He’s asking you to walk away from a relationship that’s keeping you from Him.

Maybe He’s asking you to move, start a ministry, take a leap of faith, or simply surrender something you’ve been holding onto.

Can I encourage you?

Don’t let fear talk you out of what God is calling you into.

Fear will always show you everything you could lose.

Faith reminds you of the One you’ll never lose.

Friend, if God is asking you to move, trust Him.

Take the step.

You don’t have to see the whole path—you only have to trust the One who is leading you. God has never asked us to have all the answers. He simply asks us to follow Him. The same God who has been faithful in every season of your life will be faithful in this one too.

One day, you’ll look back, and what feels scary today will become the testimony that encourages someone else tomorrow. You’ll see that God’s hand was on every closed door, every unexpected turn, and every new beginning. You’ll realize He wasn’t taking something from you—He was leading you into something greater.

If there’s one thing I know after walking with the Lord through different seasons, it’s this: I’ve never regretted obeying Him.

I’ve regretted doubting.

I’ve regretted worrying.

I’ve regretted trying to figure everything out on my own.

But I’ve never regretted saying “Yes, Lord.”

My prayer for you is that you’ll have the courage to trust Him, even when you can’t see what’s ahead. Don’t allow fear to keep you in a season God has already called you out of. His plans for you are good, His timing is perfect, and His presence will never leave you.

So if He’s calling you forward, don’t keep looking behind.

The God who blessed you in your last season is already waiting for you in your next.

And one day, you’ll look back with grateful tears and say,

“Lord, I couldn’t see what You were doing, but You never stopped being faithful. Thank You that I trusted You enough to follow.”
