Guard the Assignment God Gave You

God revealed something that happens to many believers—it’s often how the enemy comes in to steal what God has spoken.
Scripture warns us of this very thing:
“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.”
(John 10:10)
Let’s say God places an assignment in your heart: write a testimony book, because your story could change lives.
At first, you’re excited. You’re full of faith. You tell others what you believe God spoke to you.
Then comes the moment you sit in front of the computer.
Hours pass. You write sentences about your life… and then delete them. Over and over again. The struggle is real. Doubt begins to whisper.
Maybe I heard wrong.
Maybe this was my desire, not God’s.
But Scripture reminds us:
“For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.”
(1 Corinthians 14:33)
Still, fear has a way of creeping in. So you stop.
Days go by. Then weeks. Then months—sometimes even years.
Life gets busy. Distractions pile up. Other responsibilities take center stage.
Jesus spoke directly about this process:
“The cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.”
(Mark 4:19)
Then one day, the thought comes back again: You’re supposed to write that book.
You try again. This time, maybe you make a little progress—a chapter or two is written. But once more, you walk away. Life interrupts. More distractions. And again, months turn into years.
This cycle happens to so many believers.
God gives an assignment, but fear, doubt, and the lies of the enemy slowly steal the dream.
Yet God’s Word tells us:
“For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.”
(Romans 11:29)
This happened to me.
In 2007, God told me to write my testimony book. I knew it in my spirit. I was certain this was an assignment from Him. And yet, that book took 17 years to finally be published.
There were seasons of excitement, followed by seasons of silence. Times when I wrote, stopped, doubted, and walked away. Life happened. Fear crept in. Distractions multiplied.
But even then, God was faithful.
“Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
(Philippians 1:6)
God never withdrew the assignment. He simply waited—patient and faithful—until I was ready to carry it to completion.
So here’s the challenge:
Guard the assignment God gave you.
“Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you.”
(2 Timothy 1:14)
Cultivate it.
Ask for help. Take a writing course. Join a writers group. Seek mentorship. Whatever God has told you to do—equip yourself to complete it.
“Plans succeed with good counsel.”
(Proverbs 20:18)
Sometimes that means helping someone else with a similar calling—encouraging them, assisting them, sowing into their work.
“Give, and it will be given to you.”
(Luke 6:38)
If you’re stuck, go find resources.
Those resources are like water and sunlight to the seed God planted in you.
“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.”
(1 Corinthians 3:6)
The ones who eat the fruit of their labor are the ones who guard their seed and stand on God’s promises—no matter what the world or others say.
“Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”
(Galatians 6:9)
Look at Noah. Abraham. Joseph. So many incredible stories of people who trusted God even when the promise seemed delayed.
“Though the vision tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not delay.”
(Habakkuk 2:3)
If God gave you an assignment, He hasn’t forgotten it.
“The Lord will perfect that which concerns me.”
(Psalm 138:8)
Don’t let it be stolen.
Love,
Tricia
